AUTOMATED BARCODING CRITERIA

A barcode is a group of long and short bars that represent a series of numbers created from a delivery address. The USPS uses automated equipment that processes and sorts the barcoded mailpieces. Overall postage costs can be greatly lowered by creating mailpieces that meet the automated barcoding criteria. Creating the appropriate clear area on a mailpiece allows for printing of the barcoded recipient address information. In addition, it is recommended that the clear space is white although most light pastel colors can be used. A red background shouldn't be used for barcoded mailings because the USPS equipment is unable to read the barcode.

The criteria for a flatsize mailpiece (more than 6 inches width or more than 5 inches height but not more than 15 inches width or more than 12 inches height) only requires that a barcode must be at least 1/8 inch from any edge of the 'top half' of the address side. For more information, refer to Physical Standards for Address Placement on All Flats

The criteria is more complex when dealing with lettersize mailpieces (rectangular piece under 11 1/2 inches width and 6 1/8 inches height). The following examples show the required clear space on lettersize mailpieces to allow for automation compatibility. (images may not be drawn to scale)

Refer to mailing qualifications to learn more about lettersize and flatsize mailpieces.
